WHAT IS THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN ONLINE TEXT AND SPOKEN LANGUAGE?

English Text ScreenShotThis is a conversation between myself and Jay Atkinson. In this text there are abbreviations, and emoticons/emojis. At the start of this conversation it is casual and informal however there is some form of punctuation but there is other types missing such as full stops. Further down the conversation abbreviations start to appear like w/ which is a way to say with and kl which is an abbreviation for cool. The meaning of cool in this text is to agree or to suggest that you have understood whats happening.

There is a reply from Jay, he says “Yeah calm then”. Calm is 21 century slang for agreeing on something

In the conversation we both use the same emoji s. This is because i believe we both understand what we are talking about and the subject of the message.

An adjacency pair is a conversation that contains an exchange of one turn each by two speakers. The conversation must start with a greeting or a question/request, and in a agreement or an answer. In this message there is a clear act of adjacency pair taking place.

We make up for our actions in a conversation by sending emoji s or a photo. For example when Jay and myself where talking about the movie we where going to watch we knew it was funny and we had seen a scene from it so we both sent one of the most used emoji s which shows something was amusing or funny

What is the realationship between Spoken Language and Text Language?

When people text the language is more broken down to make things more efficient and easier. However i believe age makes a difference to how you communicate with friends and family. For instance ages between 12-25 write with lots of abbreviations, slang and emoji s. For example the screenshot above, it includes emoji s, abbreviations and slang. Ages between 30-45 use mainly abbreviations, however they wouldn’t use emojis or slang e.g How r u 2day?.

When we speak to different people of different ages we naturally speak in a different tone and manner, the language we use is unalike.

What is David Crystal Arguement?

Davids Arguement is that texting is ruining the English language. “As a new variety of language, texting has been condemned as textes, slanguage, a digital virus”. It is clear just by this quote he feels that technology is having a negative impact on literacy and language. “It marks dyslexia, poor spelling and mental laziness”. This quote is violating the fact that dyslexic people don’t have the knowledge or the same ability as someone else and is also mocking their use of spelling and sentence structures.

Habituation

Habituation is a form of learning in which an organism decreases or ceases to respond to a stimulus after repeated presentations. Essentially, the organism learns to stop responding to a stimulus which is no longer biologically relevant.

In this experiment the stimulus is the physical touch.

The response in the experiment is when the snail retracts its eye stalks

The snail might change its response over time becuase it gets use to the physical touch.
